The brief was to provide a new contemporary extension to the original building creating additional administration space, storage and consultation rooms. Enabling works required part of the original building to be demolished and heavy excavations and reduced levels to accommodate new DDA ramp and step access. The intention of the extension was to provide an architectural statement between old and new whilst maintaining the buildings synergy and flow. The biggest challenge was maintaining the buildings normal activities during the construction works and ensuring dust, noise and debris was kept to an absolute minimum to avoid disruption. Most of the intrusive works were scheduled for outside of practice hours and meticulously planned in advance to ensure complete success. Originally the flat roof was to be a Sedum green roof although client budget resulted in a value engineering exercise and an eventual single ply membrane with a 15year warranty. During the project we were also asked to carry out repairs to the original tiled roof and re-roof the south elevation. A new heating system, lighting and electrical system was installed to the highest performance standards achievable.
